What to Know
Held every February at multiple sites in Sapporo, the festival showcases huge snow sculptures (some building-sized) at Odori Park, illuminated ice sculptures in Susukino, and family-friendly snow slides at Tsudome. Exact dates are announced by the city each autumn for the following year.
Insider Tips
- Visit Odori Park at least once after sunset — the illumination transforms the same sculptures into a completely different spectacle.
- Layer seriously: an insulated jacket, thermal base layers, gloves, and a hat are essential at -5C to -10C.
- Wear snow boots or waterproof shoes with real grip — sidewalks get icy, especially at night.
- Warm up strategically by ducking into a food stall or shopping arcade every hour or so, rather than trying to power through the cold the whole visit.
- Book accommodation as early as possible — this is Sapporo's busiest week of the year, and hotels sell out weeks to months ahead. Otaru, about 40 minutes away by train, makes a solid overflow base.
Best Viewing Spots
- Odori Site — Main venue with the largest snow sculptures, some over 15 meters tall, lit nightly until around 22:00 with projection mapping after dark.
- Susukino Site — About a 10-minute walk from Odori; intricate ice sculptures with a livelier evening atmosphere.
- Tsudome Site — Reachable by shuttle bus; family-friendly snow slides and hands-on activities rather than static sculpture viewing.
