A Festival That Started With a Few Students

The Sapporo Snow Festival (さっぽろ雪まつり) began in 1950, when local high school students built a handful of snow statues in Odori Park. It has since grown into one of the world's best-known winter festivals, drawing roughly two million visitors each year to see around 200 snow and ice sculptures, some created by international teams competing in a snow sculpture contest.

The Three Venues

• Odori Site — the main venue, stretching 1.5km through the heart of the city. Home to the festival's largest snow sculptures, some over 15 meters tall, lit up nightly until around 22:00. This is where you will find the most photogenic large-scale displays and, in recent years, projection mapping shows after dark.
• Susukino Site — a short walk (around 10 minutes) from Odori, focused on intricate ice sculptures rather than snow. Sapporo's entertainment district setting gives this venue a different, livelier evening atmosphere.
• Tsudome Site — farther out, reachable by shuttle bus from the other two venues. Geared toward families, with giant snow slides and hands-on snow activities rather than static sculpture viewing.

Most visitors can comfortably see Odori and Susukino together in one day, since they are close together; Tsudome is worth a separate half-day if you have kids along or want a change of pace.

Best Time of Day to Visit

Daytime gives you the clearest view of the sculptures' carved detail and texture. After dark, the illumination transforms the same sculptures into a completely different spectacle — this is when Odori Park feels most magical, so plan to see the main site at least once after sunset even if you also visit during the day.

What to Eat

Food stalls throughout the festival sites sell Hokkaido specialties that happen to be perfect cold-weather food: Genghis Khan (grilled lamb, known locally as Jingisukan), Sapporo-style miso ramen, and hearty soup curry. Hot amazake and sake are widely available to warm up between sculpture viewings.

Surviving the Cold

• Layer seriously. An insulated jacket, thermal base layers, gloves, and a hat are not optional at -5°C to -10°C, especially if you plan to be outside for hours.
• Footwear matters more than people expect. Sidewalks get icy, particularly at night. Snow boots or waterproof shoes with real grip make a noticeable difference.
• Warm up strategically. Duck into a food stall or nearby shopping arcade every hour or so rather than trying to power through the cold the whole visit.

Getting There and Getting Around

From JR Sapporo Station, the Odori site is a short subway ride away on the Toho or Nanboku line to Odori Station, with several exits leading directly to the park. Sapporo itself is roughly a 1.5-hour flight from Tokyo, making the festival a very doable long weekend trip even from outside Hokkaido.

Book Accommodation Early

This is Sapporo's busiest week of the year by a wide margin. Hotels in the city center routinely sell out weeks to months in advance, so book as early as you can once you have settled on dates.
