Chiang Mai's iconic sky lantern release, when thousands of illuminated lanterns are floated into the night sky.

Sky lanterns are banned from release within central Chiang Mai over air traffic concerns — the free public release point is Mae Jo University area or Pra Chao Luang Lake in Doi Saket, outside downtown.
Official ticketed venues (such as the CAD Khomloy venue) sell out months in advance and offer the most photogenic mass lantern releases for first-timers.
You can combine both traditions in one night: release a lantern into the sky at a ticketed venue, then walk to the Ping River near Tha Phae Gate to float a krathong on the water.
