What to Know

One of Japan's three great festivals, Gion Matsuri fills the streets of central Kyoto with elaborately decorated floats (yamaboko) during the Saki Matsuri (July 17) and Ato Matsuri (July 24) processions. The lead-up evenings (Yoiyama, July 14-16 and 21-23) feature illuminated floats and street stalls.

Insider Tips

Heat is the real challenge, not crowds — Kyoto in July is hot and humid, often above 30C. Carry water, wear breathable clothing, and pace yourself.
Book accommodation early — hotels near central Kyoto fill up well in advance of mid-July.
If you are not paying for reserved seating, arrive a couple of hours early — popular spots along Shijo Street fill up fast before each parade.
For a calmer experience with fewer crowds, favor the Ato Matsuri side (July 21-24) over the busier Saki Matsuri days.

Shijo Street between Yasaka Shrine and Kawaramachi — Classic parade viewing along the main route.
Gion side of Shijo-Ohashi Bridge — Good sightlines with slightly less density.
Yasaka Shrine — Starting and ending point for several processions, especially atmospheric in the evening.
Reserved seating on Oike-dori near Kyoto City Hall — Paid but guarantees a spot without arriving hours early, for the July 17 parade.
