Summary

Kyoto's most famous festival, running throughout July with two grand float processions on July 17 and July 24.

What to Know

One of Japan's three great festivals, Gion Matsuri fills the streets of central Kyoto with elaborately decorated floats (yamaboko) during the Saki Matsuri (July 17) and Ato Matsuri (July 24) processions. The lead-up evenings (Yoiyama, July 14-16 and 21-23) feature illuminated floats and street stalls.
